Black Grouse Project

The Arran Black Grouse Group are a diverse coalition of game keepers, land owners, conservationists and farmers who are all working together to return this iconic bird to Arran. Arran was once a strong hold for Black Grouse, with large numbers recorded all over the island. Regrettably this has not been the case since the early nineteen sixties. With changes in forestry and through local support, it is recognised that Arran now has suitable habitat to support the needs of a viable wild black grouse population.

Additional support from the National Trust for Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage, has enabled the Arran Black Grouse Group to establish a hand reared breeding programme on Arran. Once we have successfully bred enough birds, they will be released into the wild. The black grouse will be monitored with the assistance of Glasgow University, to assess the success of the project.
